Three historical methods for representing negative numbers:

Sign-magnitude: MSB = sign. Disadvantage: two zeros, complex addition.

One’s complement: Negation by bitwise inversion. Likewise, two zeros.
Both methods are obsolete. The two’s complement has become the standard.
